Welcome

Thank you for your interest in the Colchester Local Group of Amnesty International!

We are a small and friendly group of like-minded people who meet monthly to learn more about human rights issues and explore what we can do within our limited means to help those who are suffering human rights abuses but who do not have the knowledge, freedom, resources or ability to do this for themselves.

We meet in central Colchester in a convenient and easily accessible location. At some meetings we welcome expert speakers who tell us about the organisation they represent, provide us with new knowledge and advise us about what we might be able to do to help.  At other meetings we take action, usually by writing letters to those in custody in doubtful circumstances and to those responsible for putting and keeping them there, typically seeking to achieve for example, a fair trial or their release.

When a significant human rights issue requires highlighting or a commemorative date falls we try to publicise the issue locally, perhaps by an article in the local press, a library exhibition or a stall in the town centre.

Sadly, the defence and protection of other peoples' human rights is as important an issue today as it has been for many years.  Whilst we do what we are able, we are always ready to welcome more members to help us.  You do not need to have any special knowledge to join us – just an interest in the well-being of your fellow human beings and a wish to be of some assistance. We do not demand a minimum commitment from members; our members contribute differently commensurate with their own interests and resources.  No matter how little time you may be able to offer there will be something positive you can contribute to help make a difference.

If you are interested – please join us!   If you are still unsure then e-mail or telephone for an informal, no commitments chat.  Details about how to do this are on the Contact Us page.  Alternatively just come to one of our monthly meetings where you will be made welcome - no advance arrangements are necessary.
